According to the genealogy of the great Suffolk family of Bacon, one Grimbald, a relative of the Norman chieftain William de Warenne, came into England at the Conquest, and settled near Holt. His great-grandson is stated to have taken the name of Bacon. This was only a resumption of an ancient Norman surname, which is still existing in the North of France.
