Meaning: The name is carried in the Meurthe-et-Moselle, where it has been at least since the late sixteenth century. Rare variants: Barabant, Barraban, Barraband, encountered in various regions. M.-T. Morlet made the name a variation of Barrabas, Hebrew personal name worn by the robber pardoned at the expense of Christ. It is true that the surname Barabas is also worn in Lorraine, but it is surprising that people have worn such a patronymic (unless they have acted as Barabbas in the mysteries). The solution may be elsewhere.
