Family Name / Last Name: Batour
No. of characters: 6
Origin: England
Meaning:

Variant form of Bater. See Bateman - Anglo-Saxon bát, a boat. A boatman. A less likely derivation is from the Old English bate, strife—one who contends, which is rather supported by the analogous surname Bater. It is probable that the Derbyshire family came from Norfolk (Lysons) and so they may have been descendants of the old Norse vikings. Like many other names terminating in man, this appears to have been originally a baptismal appellation. A Bateman de Apletrewyk occurs in the Hundred Rolls in county of York.

Family name Batour is form of Bidder. Anglo-Saxon biddere, a petitioner "petitor, vel petax." Wright's Vocah, equivalent 'to beadsman.' Piers Plowman views the bidderes with small favour; he calls them 'Roberdes knaves,' and classes them with vagabonds:-
"Bidderes and beggeres
Fast about yerle,
With hire belies and hire bagges
Of breed ful y-crammed."
