Cohee was a slang term used by the English to describe the Scots. When North America was colonized the English required the Scots to register their marriages with the local town clerk, otherwise the children of the marriage wouldn't inherit the land when their father died. The English clerks would sometimes take advantage of the fact that the Scots weren't literate and inscribe "Cohee" as the surname on the marriage license. The same thing happened in Canada and Australia.
