The Combers of Shermanbury, in that county, claimed descent from "a very ancient family at Barkham [in Fletching], and that manor, according to family tradition, was bestowed upon one of the ancestors, named de Combre, by William the Conqueror, with whom he came over from Normandy, for killing its Saxon or Danish lord in the famous battle, which placed that Duke on the throne of England."
