Variation of Abney. An estate near the Peak, in county of Derby, possessed by a family of the same name in very early times.

Family name is variation of Daubeney. Albini DeThe same as D'Albini. See - William de Albini attended William the Conqueror at the Conquest. Wace mentions him as "the butler d'Aubignie." Rom.de Rou.Taylor where some genealogical notes will be found. But Wace is in error in calling the Hastings warrior, "botcillors," since the official surname, Pincerna, or the butler, was borne not by him but by his descendant of the same names, who received the manor of Buckenham from Henry I., by the tenure of being butler at the King's coronation, an office now discharged by his descendants, the Dukes of Norfolk. He had also another name, Strongimanus, or the strong handed," from his having slain a lion under very extraordinary circumstances. His son was created Earl of Arundel. Aubigny, the original residence of the family in Normandy, is in the Cotentin. Nigel de Albini occurs in Domesday as a tenant in capite in co. Bucks. He slew Robert, Duke of Normandy's horse at Tenerchebrai, and brought Robert hiinself prisoner to his brother, King Henry I. His descendants assumed the name of Mowbray. Kelham.

A variant of Daveney. The town and castle of Avené, near Louvaine in Flanders, were occupied by our King Edward I., and from that place the family probably migrated to England. In 1279, John and Hugh de Aveney resident at Lakenheath and Wongford, county of Suffolk. At a later period the name in different forms is found in the neighbouring counties of Norfolk and Cambridge. In the fifteenth century it under went various corruptions, and was written Daubeney, Daubeny, Deweney, etc. Still later it got twisted out of all identity of form as Dybnye, Debney, Dibney, andeven Obney. At length these different spellings came to distinguish different branches, until towards the middle of the last century, when the orthography prevalent in each was fixed and handed down, the knowledge of any former identity between such differing names having been lost, except to such genealogical enquirers as Mr. H.Daveney, of Norwich, who has courteously supplied these particulars. The Catton branch of the family appear to have preserved the old and correct orthography for more than three centuries back.
