Family Name / Last Name: Deck
No. of characters: 4
Origin: Germany
Meaning:

Deck is the variant of the Dacre. Early genealogists pretend that this name was borrowed during the Crusades from Acre in Palestine, (quasi D'Acre). "The d'Acres took their name from Acres in the Holy Land, where one of their ancestors fought. Author would derive the name from the Cohors Dacorum stationed here,"— viz. at Dacre, county of Cumberland. What ever may have been the origin of the name of the place, there is no doubt that the family derive their surname from it, as we find them in possession temp. Edward I., and from them at a subsequent period sprang the two noble houses of Lord Dacre of Gilsland, called Dacre of the North, and Lord Dacre of Herstmonceus, called Dacre of the South. The latter title came however through a female into the family of Fynes, from whom through other female lines it has descended to the present peer.

A variant of the Dagger. Probably from the implement, like Sword, Brownbill, &c.
