Gurusinghe derives from two word combinations. "Guru" meaning Teacher and "Singhe" meaning Lion. the common thought would point to a Lion tamer of sorts, however the word Lion was actually referred to the King in ancient Sri Lanka, which would then refer to as "Teacher to the King". in the Ancient times the King had many teachers, and perhaps either the head teacher or one of the important teachers were named as such, due to the fact that the family names were given in the old days based on the service provided to the king.

Gurusinghe derives from two words as i have heard it Guru = Teacher Singhe = Lion (Also referred to the king when the Island was a kingdom) therefore Gurusinghe = Teacher / Trainer to the king (may have been one of the many teachers who taught the number of princes in the palace). in the old days, the surname was given based on the title, job that commoners provided to the king and the palace
