Ottiwell, a natural son of the celebrated Hugh Lupus, Earl of Chester, was tutor to those unfortunate children of King Henry I, who perished at sea, in the Blanche-Nef, in 1120. This surname has been borne for several generations, as a Christian name, in a respectable northern family of Wood. Some years ago a Mr. Ottiwell Wood appeared as a witness in a law- suit.
