Family Name / Last Name: Merrimend
No. of characters: 9
Origin: Ireland, England
Meaning:

Merrimend is variation of the Marmion. A great fedual family sprung from Robert de Marmion, lord of Fontenay in Normandy, [which Fontenai does not appear, and there are at least eleven places so called] who came hither at the Conquest, and received from the Conqueror the castle and barony of Tamworth, county of Warwick. This personage also received the manor of Scrivelsby, county of Lincoln, in grand serjeanty, for performing the office of Champion at the coronation of the king. It is alleged that the De Marmions had held the hereditary office of champion to the Dukes of Normandy anterior to the Conquest. What is more certain is, that his successors, as long as the male issue continued, and after them the heritors of his blood, the Dymokes, held, and do hold, the fine old privilege of riding, completely armed, on the day of the monarch's coronation, into Westminster Hall, there to challenge to combat any one who shall dare to oppose his title to the crown." The prefix De shows the local origin of the surname in Normandy.

Family name is variant form of the Merriman. A gay or pleasant man; one who followed a knight or outlaw.
