A variation of Nash. Dweller "atten ashe," which by the wrong division became "atte Nashe," i.e., at the ash tree; one who came from Nash that means "the ash trees," in Buckinghamshire.

On the suppression of the prefix, the N still adhered to the designation of the tree, and the name became Nash. By the same process we got Noakes, Nye, etc. It must not be forgotten, however, that there are localities called Nash, in counties Salop, Bucks, Monmouth, etc. Yet some of these were originally called Ash.
