The original last name is "De Niebla", by royal decree the De prefix was dropped from most Spanish surnames. The Niebla name in the Americas originates from the Canary Islands, Spain.

The name Niebla originates in Spain, not Mexico. The name was De Niebla until the king of Spain outlawed the prefix "De" unless you were royalty. My great...great grandfather came to Cuba in 1741 from the Canary Islands, which are part of Spain. I believe they moved to the Canary Island(in the 1500's) from the town of Niebla in Huelva Spain. The Romans built a wall around Niebla, and the town is over 3,000 years old.
