This Hebrew name was transliterated to the closest Portuguese surname, having the same meaning, which in this case is "Pimentel", a diminutive form of "Pimenta" which means "Pepper" in Portuguese. Jews did this often to make their transliterated surname look and sound as close as possible to the culture and language of their newly adopted country, in an effort to blend in seamlessly in their new environment. It was a clever tactic to be sure. This transliteration of names was applied to a great number of Portuguese Christian surnames by the Sephardic Jews of Portugal.
