Origin: United States
Meaning: Name fairly common in the Saône-et-Loire. It is a Christian name (Latin Praejectus) popularized by Saint Priest: Bishop of Clermont in Auvergne in the seventh century he founded several monasteries and a hospital. As it had excommunicated the Count of Auvergne for an abduction he had committed, to discredit the prelate, the count brought hideous slander with the king who summoned the bishop. The truth broke out and the kidnapper was beheaded. Like Saint Priest returned to his diocese in the village of Volvic, he was stopped by a bunch of thieves in the pay of the family of the beheaded. They killed Marin (or Amarin), who accompanied the bishop, thinking it was him. By the time they moved away, Saint Priest signaled their error. They shot him in turn.
