Stabel is a variation of the Stapler. A staple (Dutch stapel) means a mart or emporium, and in old times a "merchant of the staple" signified a trader of importance. In course of time, however, the word stapler was monopolized by the dealer in wool, and it is now only heard in the compound "wool-stapler." Drayton, in his Polyolbion, commends Leicester:
"for her wool, whose staple doth excel,
And seems to overmatch the golden Phrygian fell."
