The earliest documentation of the surname Turkowski is from 1466 during the Peace Of Toruń. During that time Poland gave 160 surnames of nobility in Royal Prussia from the city of Toruń that is geographically located next to an extreme bend or turn in the river. Take away all of the suffixes in Turkowski, and Tur is Polish for Turn. However, with the influence of Baltic languages the locals may have translated it to mean strong from the Cyrillic language.
