Dyson is form of Tyson. The son of Ty, a variant of Dye, a pet form of Dionysius, i.e., the Grecian god of wine; the son of Tys, a pet form of Matthias meaning "gift of Jehovah"; one who kindles strife or mischief.

Dyson is a variation of Tyssen. Of Flemish origin, and resident at Ghent, and afterwards at Flushing, in Holland, about the commencement of the XVII century. Daniel Tyssen, of the latter town, married Apollonia Ridley, a grand-niece of Nicholas Ridley, bishop of London, who suffered in the Marian persecution. By her he had a son, who settled in London, and was naturalized by Act of Parliament in 1689.
