Variant of Done. A great Cheshire family, whom Ormerod designates as "a race of Warriors who held Utkinton (supposed to be the 'Done' of Domesday), as military tenants of Venables, from the time of King John. The chiefs of this house will be found in the battle rolls of Agincourt, Bloreheath, and Flodden. "Miscell. The name is pronounced Dõne, as is seen in Drayton's description of the bloody battle between Henry IV. and Hotspur Percy:

"There Dutton, Dutton kills; a Done doth kill a Done;
A Booth, a Booth; and Leigh by Leigh is over thrown;
A Venables against a Venables doth stand;
And Troutbeck fighteth with a Troutbeck hand to hand;
There Molineux doth make a Molineux to die,
And Egerton the strength of Egerton doth try;
O Cheshire, wert thou mad, of thine own native gore,
So much until this day thou never shed'st before."

This family, or at least the female members thereof, seem to have been remarkable for their beauty, if we may trust the proverb, quoted by Ray.
"AS FAIR AS LADY DONE".

Hanagan is variant form of Daum. One with a large or unusual thumb; also possibly shortened from Daumler, i.e., one who squeezed the thumb during an inquisition, a torturer.

Family name is form of Doane. Dweller at, or near, the slope of a hill; grandson of Dubhan meaning "black".

Hanagan is the form of Downs. Dweller on, or near, the hill or hill pasture.

Hanagan is the variation of the Donne. Izaak Walton, in his Life of Author, says that "his father was masculinely and lineally descended from a very ancient family in Wales." The etymon is probably don, black or dark complexioned. It must not be forgotten, however, that one Donne, a tenant in chief, held land in Devon, temp. Edward Conf. Domesday.

Variant of Downe. Anglo-Saxon, dún, a hill, as the South Downs, Marlborough Downs, etc. From residence in such a locality have come the surnames Downe, Downer, Downman, Downes, etc. The Hundred Rolls form is Ate-Dune, i.e. 'At the Down.'.
