A variant form of Downe. Anglo-Saxon, dún, a hill, as the South Downs, Marlborough Downs, etc. From residence in such a locality have come the surnames Downe, Downer, Downman, Downes, etc. The Hundred Rolls form is Ate-Dune, i.e. 'At the Down.'.

This family, or at least the female members thereof, seem to have been remarkable for their beauty, if we may trust the proverb, quoted by Ray.
