Family Name / Last Name: Jack
No. of characters: 4
Origin: Ireland, Scotland, England
Meaning:

Form of the Jacques. Of James.

Is the variant of Jacques. Descendant of Jacques meaning "the supplanter".

Descendant of Jack, a pet form of John meaning "gracious gift of Jehovah".

A nickname which has, like many others, become a surname. With respect to this appellation, it is curious that meaning, as it originally did, James, from the French Jacques, and Latin Jacobus, it should have come to be considered as a synonym of John. It was usually applied in a contemptuous way, as in Jackanapes, Jack-pudding, Jack-a-dandy, Jack-at-a-pinch, Jack-in-office, etc.

Jack may be originally Jacques or James, and not John as per this passage from Tyrwhitt's Chaucer note on v. 14,816 "I know not how it has happened, that in the principal modern languages, John, or its equivalent, is a name of contempt, or at least of slight. So the Italians use Gianni, from whence Zani; the Spaniards Juan, as Bobo-Juan or foolish John; the French Jean, with various additions; and in English when we call a man a John, we do not mean it as a title of honour. Chaucer uses Jacke fool, as the Spaniards do Bobo Juan; and I suppose Jack-ass has the same etymology." In Thomson's Etymons, and Halliwell's Dict. a great number of uses to which the word Jack is applied.

Jack is a variant form of the Jacks. The genitive form of Jack.

A form of Jex. Probably from Jacques, French James.
