A form of the Knyvett. This name is a corruption of Dunerit, and Leland derives it from Dunnevit, that is Dunneheved, the original name of Launceston, in Cornwall. It is said that Othomarus, lord of the castle and town of Launceston, took up arms against William the Conqueror, and was deprived of his possessions, which were afterwards restored to him on his marriage with a daughter of William Dammartin, a Norman. His descendants took the name of De Knyvet or De Knevet. Knivet, Knivat, and Knyvet, as well as De Knyvet, are found in Hundred Rolls.
