The history of Iraqi last names is a long and complicated one. For centuries, Iraqis did not have last names. Instead, they used patronymics, which are surnames based on the given name of the person's father. So, for example, if a man named Hussein had a son named Ali, that son would be known as Ali Hussein. If Hussein had another son named Hassan, that son would be known as Hassan Hussein.
This system worked well enough for small communities where everyone knew each other, but it became increasingly impractical as Iraq's population grew and people started moving around the country. In the late 19th century, the Ottoman Empire (of which Iraq was a part) began requiring all Iraqis to adopt last names. The process was not always smooth - many Iraqis resisted taking last names, and there were sometimes disputes over what a person's last name should be. But eventually most Iraqis came to accept the new system, and today almost all Iraqis have last names.
There are many different theories about the origins of Iraqi last names. Some say they are derived from tribal or clan affiliations; others believe they are simply recycled versions of old Ottoman or Persian surnames.
Let's have a look at the Iraqi surnames below.
